Kelly - I'm with you, I'd love to have a goat (really, two since they need a friend or they get lonely), but I definitely wouldn't have the set up for that! In a perfect world, I would (for that matter, I'd have room for two alpacas as well, and a small pig, just because I like them...), but chickens definitely are feasible for me, and it's ridiculous that so many cities ban having them.

Yanno, I was thinking about this very thing the other day. My mom's family made it through Depression and living on a very restricted income for a long time. Why? All those old Italian families didn't depend on bought food. They grew their own veg, put up stuff for winter, didn't eat a lot of meat, and kept their own animals. Is it feasible for everyone? No, but for the people who can do it and care to do it, it's an excellent, affordable alternative. And, as you pointed out, if they have enough interest in it to pursue the option, they probably aren't the type to treat the animals badly.

Me, I'd like to throw in a goat to the mix. Free milk & cheese PLUS the lawn gets clipped.

I AM going to do something! Either write to the Mayor (which I wouldn't expect to do much), but I'm definitely going to see if I can talk to the councillor too.

I know, it absolutely BOGGLES the mind that the animal welfare people aren't accepting this new change to the bylaw in Vancouver with open arms. For all the reasons you listed. It's madness!

I'll be so excited for you when you finally get your hens.

You should write to the mayors office and let them know how you feel! If you haven't already that is!! I think talking to the councilor is a good idea though, perhaps she would table an amendment to the bylaw for you.

I find it shocking that animal welfare organizations are against people keeping backyard chickens.. so it's bad to have chickens in a backyard, but it's okay to buy eggs from commercial laying operations where the chickens are stacked in cages the size of a sheet of paper? Not all families can afford to spend $7 on a carton of organic free range eggs.. but they could probably afford to keep 4 hens. A bag of chicken feed to feed 4 hens costs $11, and it will last you 6 months, mix the chicken feed with vegetable scraps and you've got a perfect meal for a chicken.

We are allowed to keep chickens in New Westminster, I don't because we're buying a place and moving soon (I hope..) and I have enough stuff to move already. But I'm happy to know now that as long as we stay in New West, Burnaby or Vancouver I'll be able to have my chickens at the next place.
